NYRA Cancellation Policy

4 years 4 months ago #1294 by Cathy
Recently, there has been considerable confusion and consternation with regard to the late cancellations at Aqueduct. The winter season has recently begun, and it seems like a good time to review the cancellation policy agreed upon by NYRA and the Jockeys' Guild. The agreement dictates that racing is automatically cancelled if the wind chill is less than 10 degrees, or when wind gusts reach 40 mph or more. Obviously, if the forecast is at-or-near 10 degrees NYRA and the jockeys will need to be in close communication, as the conditions may warrant closer scrutiny.

This policy, specific to winter racing, is similar to the one that has been in place for years. The good news is that NYRA and the Jockeys' Guild met late last week to reaffirm the guidelines.

The safety of the track is of paramount concern to horsemen, jockeys and NYRA. When there are sudden or significant weather events involving moisture or a combination of difficult elements, we count on NYRA to use their good judgement to protect the safety of both our human and equine athletes.

We also know - only too well - that weather is difficult to predict, but it is frustrating to all horsemen and to our fans when there is a late cancellation, especially after horses have been treated and shipped to Aqueduct.

We hope the re-affirmation of the safety guidelines and cancellation policy by all concerned will result in smoother operations and more understanding as we progress through the next few months.
