Eventing Horse Finds Solution to Concussion Related Injuries

Two years ago during a spring training trip to North Carolina, Kristen Woodworth’s preliminary event horse, “Sylvus”, came up lame. He was diagnosed with deep bruising of the navicular bones and moderate inflammation in the coffin joints in both front feet, as well as bilateral MCL strains from the concussion of schooling on the hard, dry, uneven footing in North Carolina.

Six months later, after multiple vet exams, xrays, a MRI and a series of IRAP injections, her horse was finally sound and ready to compete again.

Icing Sylus’ feet after galloping cross country (by way of standing in a muck tub full of ice water up to his knees) became regular practice. Then, her farrier discovered Propads at his local farrier supply store.

Propads are dual-purpose polyurethane hoof pads that provide shock absorption and frog support to a shod horse. Propads fill the void between the frog and the ground, giving the function and feeling of being barefoot while wearing a shoe.

“The concept behind the Propads made sense in direct correlation to his injury as a result of concussive forces he had endured. Sylvus has been shod with Propads for over a year now and has not had any further issues,” says Kristen.
