Thoroughbred horse racing in Cyprus is a relatively small but growing industry. The Nicosia Race Club is the only organization in Cyprus that is authorized to organize horse races. All race events are held on the Hippodrome at Agios Dometios, Nicosia.

  • The Nicosia Race Club was founded in 1934 and is a non-profit organization. The club organizes around 500 races per year, with a total prize money of around €1 million. The races are held on Sundays and Wednesdays in the autumn, winter, and spring, and on Saturdays and Wednesdays in the summer.
  • The most popular type of race in Cyprus is the flat race, which is run over a distance of 1,200 meters. Other types of races include jump races, steeplechases, and harness races.
  • There are a number of foreign horse owners who race their horses in Cyprus. The most successful foreign owner in recent years is Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris, who has won several major races with his horses.
