1- Jenny Pitman: The Autobiography

Jenny Pitman is one of the biggest names in the horse racing world. As a racehorse trainer, she won the 1983 Grand National through Corbiere and thus became the first woman to pull off such a feat.

To prove that it wasn’t a mere fluke, she trained another Grand National winner, with her horse Royal Athlete triumphing in the 1995 edition of the prestigious race. The former British racehorse trainer also claimed two Cheltenham Gold Cup victories. However, all these achievements didn’t come easy for her as she has detailed all the struggles in her autobiography.

Jenny had a passion for horse racing from an early age and joined a racing yard when she was only 15. She soon married jockey Richard Pitman and they went on to establish their own stable. They subsequently split up but she managed to earn a name as one of the greatest trainers on her own, despite facing financial difficulties.

2- McIlvanney On Racing

Hugh McIlvanney was one of the biggest sportswriters who remained associated with the profession for an incredible six decades. His book On Racing is a fascinating read for any sports fan, with the veteran Scottish journalist’s prose exuding excitement and thrill.

McIlvanney’s book is a compilation of articles that covers many great horses, great races and great jockeys, etc. It is full of so many powerful and amazing lines that you will be tempted to stop every now and then to re-read and marvel at the skills of the writer.

3- Seabiscuit: An American Legend

Seabiscuit: An American Legend, the 2001 non-fiction book of Laura Hillenbrand, is one of the best horse racing books ever. It is a biography of famous racehorse Seabiscuit who brought joy and excitement to so many racing fans during the Great Depression.

The book received almost universal acclaim when it was first published, with many commentators praising the storytelling skills of Hillenbrand. It was also adapted into a 2003 sports film named Seabiscuit, starring Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, and Chris Cooper.
