June 2016 - Is your horse ready for show season? It’s never too early (or too late!) to help your horse be their healthiest this show season. In her article "Joint Prep and Conditioning for Show Season", Dr. Eleanor Kellon, VMD, Staff Veterinary Specialist for Uckele Health & Nutrition, shares that joint nutraceuticals came to the market about 30 years ago and how they can be helpful for horses of any age in formal work.
She continues by providing findings from her field trials over the years and the overwhelming benefits they can provide to the health of horses' joints. Although a preventative and proactive approach is recommended, it's not too late to make a difference with joint nutraceuticals - for all horses at all levels.
Dr. Kellon decribes issues such as “Osselets”, joint fluid, and inflammation related to synovitis and how joint supplements can help. Read more...
Who ever thought a $10 contribution could help buy a winning racehorse? "Dark Horse: The Incredible True Story of Dream Alliance" won the World Cinema Documentary category at the Sundance Film Festival and is exclusively reviewed for EquineInfoExchange.com by Patricia N. Saffran.
In 2000, from a small property allotment in the tiny Welsh village, Jan Volkes unwittingly energized Cefn Fforest with her idea to breed a Thoroughbred. Jan says, “We were a tight knit community as most coal mining towns are. Most of the people were in the pit or connected to the coal mining industry.” She was working two jobs, and still works as a cleaning lady at the local Asda.
Jan asked a tax advisor named Howard Davies to be the head of her racing alliance, and then asked other town people to join and chip in $10 a week toward the venture. Twenty-three people then formed a syndicate that they called the Alliance Partnership. The story continues with Jan meticulously choosing an appropriate, yet economical broodmare and mated her to the best stallion at stud nearby that she could afford.
The resulting colt encountered obstacles and nearly had to be put down after severing a tendon, but the modestly earning syndicate members voted unanimously that $20,000 of Dream's winnings were to be used for expensive stem cell surgery at Liverpool Veterinary Hospital, and for fifteen months of rehabilitation. One member said, “The money belongs to the horse. He’s one of the syndicate.”
Dream went on to win the Welsh Grand National and perhaps even more importantly, his win was also a triumph for veterinary medicine in that he was one of the first horses to win after receiving stem cell surgery. Read Ms. Saffran's entire review and watch the VIDEO.
