Wellness Exams

General wellness visits are an integral part of equine health. We recommend routine exams every 6 months.

Lameness

Our team is experienced and knowledgeable to keep your equine athlete sound and healthy.

Reproduction

We offer cutting edge reproductive services at your farm including managing cycles with fresh cooled or frozen semen and embryo transfer. Stallion services available as well. 

Dentistry

A happy horse has a healthy mouth. We offer sedation dentistry with either power dental instruments or hand flotation. 

Emergency Service

Prepurchase Exams

A thorough exam is a critical component in the search for your next equine companion. We offer comprehensive prepurchase exams.

DIagnostics

We offer digital radiography, stall-side gastroscopy (stomach scope), ultrasonography, upper airway endoscopy and we have in-house laboratory testing to ensure the best care for your horse.

Therapeutics

We offer the most up to date, evidence-based therapeutics. We also work closely with other practitioners and laymen to provide any adjunct services that your horse may need.

About Our Clinic

Gas Light Equine Veterinary Practice opened in the summer of 2006. That is when Drs James and Kerry Beckman moved back to the Louisville, Kentucky area. Since then, the practice has grown from a pickup truck and a cell phone to a full service mobile equine veterinary practice.

Gas Light Equine is a three veterinarian practice that services horse farms in seven counties in two states. We are a team that prides ourselves on providing high quality veterinary care and customer service to all of our clients. Meet the Team

James Beckman, DVM

James is a native of Southern Indiana. He was raised in Lanesville, a small town about 15 miles west of Louisville. Dr Beckman is a graduate of the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing vet school, he worked as an associate in a private practice in Pennsylvania. After two years in Pennsylvania, Dr Beckman moved back to the Louisville area to be closer to family and to start a new veterinary practice with his wife. Dr Beckman is a also a Certified Control Judge for the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC). When he is not working, James enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, and cheering for Oklahoma State University Cowboys. GO POKES!

Kerry Beckman, DVM,
DIPL ABVP (Equine)

Kerry grew up in Oldham County, spending her youth showing hunters and participating in Pony Club. After graduating with honors from the University of Florida, she completed an internship in an equine hospital, and worked as an associate in a busy equine clinic in Oklahoma. She then completed a residency in Equine Sports Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. After completing her residency she became board certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Equine Practice. Dr Beckman has been published in peer-reviewed veterinary journals, and has authored several chapters in the Equine Five Minute Veterinary Consult. Dr Beckman enjoys working horse shows and other equine events.

Nina Stewart, DVM

Dr. Stewart is a native of Indiana. She graduated from Purdue University before going on to graduate from Michigan State University Veterinary School. She has worked in two of the most advanced equine hospitals in the world, in both Ocala, Florida and Lexington, Kentucky. She has also done humanitarian veterinary work internationally. Dr. Stewart is now excited to bring her years of experience to help the people and horses served by Gas Light Equine.

Our practice area

We are based in Oldham County, Kentucky.  Our routine farm call area includes Oldham, Henry, Shelby, and Jefferson Counties in Kentucky.  In addition, we travel to Clark, Floyd, and Harrison Counties in Indiana.  We also offer haul-in services if you are outside of our routine area.

A "New Client" form will need to be completed at your first visit. Feel free to fill out this form prior to your visit and return to us via email. Otherwise, we will have them available for you at your appointment.
