March 28, 2020 – We’re honored to welcome famed sportswriter Wallace Matthews as a contributor to EIE’s original content. The award-winning, New York City-based columnist, blogger, television commentator, sports-talk radio host and podcaster has reported on major sports including hockey, baseball, boxing and horse racing since 1983. He is one of the few local sportswriters who has written for all four of New York’s major daily papers: Newsday, the New York Post, the New York Times and the New York Daily News.

Mr. Matthews gives his insightful perspective about horse trainer Rick Dutrow’s 10-year suspension. He reports that the Queens District Attorney’s office recently re-opened its investigation into the case, including new allegations that incriminating evidence was planted in his barn, leading to the initial charges and suspension. It is worthwhile to hear what Dutrow’s friends and associates—and even some of his rivals—have to say about him. Read Wallace Matthews' recent article for EIE, and get up-to-date info on this unfolding story here: Facts or Fiction? Dutrow Deserves Time Served. The topic of this story was also featured on the cover of the New York Daily News.

The Cornell University Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) has seen a rise in the diagnosis of equine enteric coronavirus cases. The AHDC Veterinary Support Services veterinarians are attributing this increase in the Northeast to improved awareness of the disease, which is leading to more diagnostic submissions. Nearly 2000 samples have been submitted to the AHDC for equine coronavirus testing, of which approximately 18% have tested positive.

Learn more about how this can affect horses, how to submit a sample and the best biosecurity measures you can take to protect your horse. Read the article here: Equine Enteric Coronavirus.

The EIE Calendar of Events is wide and broad in its coverage, as we strive to inform readers of every equine event that may be of interest. Unfortunately, many events are being cancelled as a response to the social distancing that has been recommended to slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Eventually things will be restored to a normal schedule and our calendar is a great way to keep abreast with the latest events. We look forward to the end of this moratorium when all equine activities will resume!

Our 2019 Calendar included over 1,000 events that helped bring together horses and horse-lovers in virtually every discipline and interest. The entire world of equine sports, festivals, conferences, courses and other pertinent events are included in our extensive Calendar. The Events Calendar features Monthly, Weekly, and Yearly views, each accessed easily with a single click.

Looking to the future, if you'd like to list (for free) on the Calendar of Events, please contact us at EIE—let's work together to spread the word about your horse-centric activities on the world's most comprehensive equine website.

Every day we publish an astonishing array of articles, pieces that are both thought-provoking and entertaining, on a wide variety of topics. The Article Archive is a great way to explore the entire trove of stories.

Here’s a recent story which is very popular with our readers. The Michelangelo of Cowboy Boots – Charlie Dunn’s bootmaking career spanned some 80 incredible years. Singer Jerry Jeff Walker made Dunn extra-famous in 1972 with an eponymous ditty about the diminutive bootmaker “with the smilin’ leathery face.”

“Charlie Dunn,” Walker crooned. “He’s the one to see.”

Thousands of satisfied boot wearers, many of whom surely treasure their custom Dunns today (27 years after Charlie’s death) know that the song rang true. Charlie Dunn’s signature inlay was the rose. Ernest Tubb bought a pair of Charlie Dunn’s rose boots in the early 1940s; thus began his reputation as “the Michelangelo of Cowboy Boots.”
